Got this and a few Mercury dimes at a garage sale (all under melt) and I was wondering, is this fake toning? I have no eye for identifying it and I know I've read here that the colors are supposed to mix evenly if it's real toning so I'm not sure. Anyway, this is my second 1921D.
Joe, There was a debate on this topic several years ago -- on another coin collector thread -- with several suggestions, without any conclusions. From my recollection, suggestions were: 1) The planchets were treated differently and hence did not tend to tone. 2) The cloth bags were of a different composition (perhaps lower sulfur content) and did not promote toning. 3) Storage of the 1921 coins at the mint was in a more controlled environment and did not promote toning.
All of these are viable, and may be likely contributors. In any event, it is uncommon to find a 1921 Morgan that is nicely toned. This argument also applies to Peace dollars.
