I wanted to know if anyone can tell me what mint mark style the S is? Or if it is inverted? I have looked on varietyvista and can't decide. Here are some pics. Thank you!
There were three different mint mark styles used for the 45 s dime. The most common is known as "Knob Tail" which is a term used by David Lange in his book on Mercury dimes. This same MM style is known as a "Ball Serif with flat spot on lower ball" by CONECA listers. The second MM style is the "Micro S" and is estimated to be about 10% of the population. The third style, and one we do not hear much about is the "trumpet" style. David Lange states that it is less common than the Micro S. CONECA lists the Trumpet MM as common. One just sold on ebay for over $100 in an ANACS holder graded MS65 "Trumpet Tail" two week ago. 191221014261 is the item number. Another one sold for $42 a week later. Here is an unattributed coin now up for bid 231294118721 Does anybody have any Inverted S dimes?
I know about the MM styles but not the price for the Trumpet Tail has gone up, collectors may have found out that its not as common to the regular knob tail S. The difficult one to find is the 43 S Trumpet Tail.
OK here is one or two for ya'll to look for. The 1945 S Inverted MM Mercury dime. I just had three new listings added to the Wexler files found at http://doubleddie.com Look for the listings for IMM liberty dimes. There you will find photos of the IMM along with die markers for identification.
