Not coin related, just to start this off.

I sold an item for 25 days ago, and I get a message from the buyer saying he was out of town and just got back to finally inspect the items he bought on ebay. He says that he thusly now discovers that some part of the item has been damaged (and he included a picture of it for me). He has not elevated it to get ebay involved yet.

Since the item is now broken, I do not really want it back. He has stated he'd like me to refund him part of the value (2/5 of the value) to get it repaired himself. I am thinking of submitting a claim to the USPS (since it had $50 insurance for being mailed Priority), and I'm really thinking it best to refund him what he wants (so that I'm not then left out the full cost and end up with a broken item that I couldn't re-sell)

So...thoughts anyone?

You seem to be on the right tracks. Sellers usually don't issue partial refunds but in your case it seems like it works out fairly for both sides
If you consider 40% to be a fair refund price then by all means, do so. But make sure that you have the Insurance Cal m sorted out first.

How much $ was the sale for? Yes, I agree, you're on the right track. The seller did the right thing by contacting you first. Am assuming that you agree that the photos show the damage mentioned. IMO you are probably correct to refund the partial $. I wouldn't let the insurance claim hang the buyer out to dry too long...the sooner you can resolve it with the buyer, the better.

FWIW, I had an expensive ($260) lamp damaged by FEDEX last year. I reimbursed the seller the whole 260 and told him to keep the lamp, and filed an insurance claim with FEDEX. They paid $130, and about a month later the buyer told me he got the lamp fixed for $130, and he sent me back $130. Funny how things work out sometimes.

The sale was for $50 and $18 ship, and yes the photo shows the damage. I thought that was the best way to handle it, so I'll just refund him the $20 he wants to fix it (since, I don't know if there's anyone around me that could fix it if it were returned). And then I'll just have to see what happens with the insurance claim.

Thanks.
