Recently purchased a raw coin from them that they claimed was Gem BU ++. So I immediately sent it out to ANACS, and today the grade posted as 55 Details Polished I just sent them a message stating that I'd send the coin back to them for a full refund, or keep the coin for a 90% refund. We shall see.

Unfortunately, I can already hear their reply. "It is against the rules to give non slabbed coins a Sheldon Scale grade on ebay. All grading of coins is very subjective and that it is up to the buyer to use the photos supplied to grade the coin themselves before making a bid " It never hurts to ask and I hope that they have a conscience and do the right thing. In the mean time, always ...always seek to improve your own grading skills.

I see a lot of fairviewcoins auctions come through on my ebay searches but most of the time I can't really tell what the coin looks like as their photos are often over saturated or over exposed. It's tough buying copper from photos, that's for sure. Hope this one works out to your satisfaction.

Is the original auction still up? Posting the pics would be very educational.
I could also see them declining your request, but any decent dealer would give you a refund. I wish you luck.

They might decline my request. At the same time they have no CYA language in their auctions and offer 30 day returns. They also are pretty good about listing a coin as cleaned, whizzed, etc. when they think it is. They sold this as Gem BU ++ and I had it professionally graded and it clearly isn't close. My message to them was courteous. If they aren't negotiable at all I'll just open a case and return the coin and let the chips fall where they may. I haven't left feedback yet. Maybe the link will work. http://www.ebay.com/itm/30115616237...RK:MEBIDX:IT

You certainly have a beef with them at that price point and their photo appears to be intentionally deceptive because the surfaces look nothing at all like the coin you actually received.

Good luck with the return. A raw coin with those kind of pics is a gamble.

May I respectfully ask why you didn't just return the coin initially if it was so clearly a problem coin?

Fairviewcoins gets a big thumbs up. They responded with an apology, said he totally missed that one, and said they would issue a full refund plus $30 towards my slabbing costs jdmern, The coin looked better in-hand, actually nothing like the fiery picture of it in their listing. Also they usually list a coin honestly if it has problems. They sell a lot of raw problem coins and are up-front about them. I thought this one had a decent chance to grade non-details since that's how they advertised it.

Now that is going above and beyond! What a stand-up dealer! That is something that should be thoroughly commended.

Wow, now that IS customer service, good on them for doing the right thing and standing up for their mistake. You might even want to point them to this thread, as you may have just got them some new clients out of this. I'm sure that would be appreciated, it's not often these days, for dealers to have the courage to admit a mistake, especially on ebay where so many are just rude jerks. I will add Fairviewcoins to my watching list, one never knows what coins they may have that would find a nice home in my collections. Great report, and great ending to an all too often sad story.

So I got the coin back from ANACS and sent it along to the seller. Got my refund, and I mentioned that I might be interested in bidding on it if he ever decided to sell it again. He told me that he's first going to bring it back to the dealer he got it from.
I found that very interesting. So he's not the "polisher." A lot of the coins he sells have the same look, so apparently he's flipping them, and whoever he's buying them from is doing LOTS of polishing.
