The pictured medallion was among the effects of my late father. The military sounding motto makes me think it may be related to his service in the Army Air Corp 55th Fighter Group during the second world war.

Can anyone provide any detail about what it might be, and under what circumstances it may have been acquired?

Just need to find the coat of arms in the circle.
Must be sometyhing 'royal' because of the crown.
Maybe british? May be even WW I

In Flanders the text is 'Voor outer en heerd', used in the 'Boerenkrijg' (boer war) in 1789, but this has nothing to do with this medal.
The 'pro aris et pro focis' was very well used

The Motto translates into 'For Home And Hearth'. This has been used by everything from grade schools to a New York Volunteer regiment in the Civil War. Many English and Canadian regiments have used it also. You may need to do some background history on your father to lern exactly what is for.

This seems to have been manufactured with a basic design with the Latin motto. There are a number of versions available on ebay with different central settings added, some coats of arms, some not:
