Hello all.

My late grandmother sent me her coin collection before passing. It's taken me a while to go through them. I do not know a thing about coin collecting so please be kind with your remarks.

I have came across a double headed and tailed penny with an authenticity certificate. Google has told me that they are usually magician coins. Can anyone help with this? Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.
Nalani

Double heads/tails error coins are not possible for US issues because the shafts of the obverse and reverse dies are designed to not be interchangeable, i.e. you cannot mount an obverse die in the reverse die slot. However, anyone with a machine shop can create these "errors" using halves from two genuine coins.

Thank you for your response. Buying an authentic coin like this would only be for novelty purposes?

Technically, the coins are authentic, but they have been altered. The certificate of authenticity is misleading, if in fact it was issued for these double heads/tails coins. Any certificate of authenticity that does not specify the exact coin type that it is gaurenteeing is usually not reliable.

To an error coin collector, there is no value in this piece. Coins of this nature are marketed to those who know little or nothing about coins in the first place.

Novelty items. Very little, if any, resale value, but fun to have.
