My son and I are attempting to fill a modern penny book from circulation and have noticed almost no recent (2010+) "D" mint coins. I think we found 1. Is there a reason?

Mintage of D Lincoln Cents is in line with P mints; in some years of that time frame, Denver actually out produced Philly and each mint produced 2+ billion coins for the years I checked. I have to think it must be geography. I live in Ohio and it takes quite awhile for D mint coins to get even this far.

No. Both P&D business strikes are for circulation.
What part of the country do you live in? If you live in the eastern area, the recent cents from Denver would take a long time to get to there all the way from Denver. So that explains why you can't see many recent Denver coins so much in the eastern area, and also why you can't see so much recent Philly coins in the western area.

Where I'm at (Arizona) we don't see very many "P" coins. It's almost all "D" in our change.
I can assure you that Denver is minting plenty of 2014 coins.

I'm in East Texas and it's mostly D mint coins in circulation, especially current releases.

It takes about 10-20 years for P and D coins to equally saturate circulation, if they ever do fully. The mints aren't required and don't bother to ship BU coins any further than they are required to. Any new coins you find from the other side of the country got there in the pockets of tourists or visitors. I live in Georgia and it's pretty rare to see D cents from after 2003.

I've booked a cruise through the Panama Canal in October, and will be flying into LA, meeting the ship there and disembarking in Tampa. I'll try to get some Denver coins in change in LA and spend them in Tampa! Every little helps!

That makes sense. Now that I think of it, I rememember seeing the mintage numbers of the Ds and it seemed like there were a lot minted, so that was why I was asking. I thought maybe they were distributed evenly around the country by the mint, but apparently it's not the case. Thanks for the info. Always learning something new. If I would have known that I would have asked if I could have gone through my cousins purse when she visited from CO last Thanksgiving.

My last time I was back east, I bought a box of pennies and UPS'd them to myself back here. Not that I'm obsessed or anything.

I rarely find D cents but found 2 BU 2014's this year already. None of the other denominations though. I am in Vermont, so that's pretty darn east. Canadian cents are almost more common than D.

Yeah, I'm in Central NY an hour or so from the Canadian border, and Canadian cents are common for sure.

I have just started working on Wheat cents and decided to get a current book to work on. I filled it in no time with out much searching. It's the Whitmans that goes to 2013 and has one space open. I was somewhat amazed when I found not only 2014D but 2014(P) with-in a few dollars. Keep looking they are out there

Remember that Denver is a mile high area. This means coins must roll down to sea level before you see them in change.
