I know everyone goofs, but how often does PCGS goof up?

Well, yes it isn't the Small Date variety. But I could see people bidding on it for that beautiful toning.

how does it even get that toning? I'm sure there are artificial ways of doing it and it probably ruins the value? I'm just not familiar with such techniques.

No, it's not AT. These toning especially tend to show up on many 1970-S proof cents. They toned that way in the proof set case. No AT involved.

There are also some floating around in NGC and ANACS slabs with the wrong attribution. The toning is natural, I currently only have a PCGS rainbow example, but I've bought and sold many.

I have a couple like that, one of them is my avatar. One of them is still in the proof set. Definitely natural.

the seller updated the listing stating that it is indeed a large date and that PCGS mislabeled it. you've gotta appreciate their honesty!

That's interesting toning to be sure--but I could see it was a LD before I enlarged the seller's pic.

They call that bullseye toning, some say they are the end coin in the roll.
