Since there is so much interest in this coin, I thought a separate thread for it is appropriate.

So, who is going to buy it? Will it appreciate in value?

You might want to check out this thread on the topic.

As for me, I am most definitely planning on buying one. I love Kennedy half dollars in general, love proof coins, REALLY love reverse proof coins and, of course, there's the fact that it will be the first (and likely only) Kennedy half dollar ever struck in gold. What's not to love?

As for whether it will appreciate in value, I don't really care (although the potential increase in value is how I convinced my wife that I really need to buy one). I can't imagine it not increasing in value, however, unless the price of gold eventually plummets back down to historically low values. I think the high cost (including the premium) will keep the mintage relatively low, and the number of people who will want this for years to come will just keep increasing as more people become aware of it. Some people think it's all about extremely low mintages, but there also has to be high demand down the road. The Perth Mint, for example, puts out mind-numbing amounts of "special, limited mintage" products every year, but unless anybody actually cares about them 10 years from now they will never be anything more than colorized bullion. I truly feel, however, that this JFK gold coin has the potential to be in constant demand 10, 20 and even 50 years from now.

Interestingly, I just noticed on the Mint's web site that there is a household order limit for web and phone Orders of 5, but a limit for retail locations of 2.

I am not too familiar with gold but is 24K gold considered pure gold? I know the Canadian mint say their gold is 99.999% pure. So is 24K gold considered 99.999% pure?

Also, the spot rate for gold today is $1281 per oz, so is there is $960 worth of gold in each coin?

Yes, the golden Kennedy will be worth around $963 once its been bought. Once (or "if") gold goes up to $1655/ounce, buyers will finally have their coin worth what they paid for it.

Personally, I'm not a fan of people who buy coins for the soul intent of making money. If I had enough cash (I don't)I would love to buy one just because I like the looks of it, and probably wouldn't care whatever price it will be worth in the future.

The silver Kennedy 4-pack will be overpriced too, but I may be able to buy one of those.

I will watch APMEX and Goldmart to see where they price the 70's as preorders. Last year with the RP Buffalo they were not bad in the beginning. Some as little as $75-100 over. Then as the sell out happened those jumped to $300-400 over and now sit much higher. I doubt I will buy one from the mint.
Rest in Peace

tpg22 thanks for that info about the Buffalos.

I will be going to the show and I was considering standing in line to get a ticket to get to purchase a Kennedy. But then I saw a Coin World article which stated people would be allowed to line-up for it at 8AM but the tickets would not be handed out until 10:30 or 11AM.

Anyway, I think I'll at least take a look at how it's going there but I honestly don't think I could stand in line for very long. I have MS and strong breeze could knock me over. (I am exaggerating.) :)

Then there are several options - it seems - for getting them slabbed with First Day stickers...and I was wondering how much that would matter.

I was seriously thinking about gettig two and trying to sell one right away, but if they will only sell one at a time, and if the line is really long....I think I'll have to forget about it entirely.

I'll be buying it, but first I'm going to go to lunch. Since it's mint to demand, I'm not too worried about them selling out within the first hour...

Hmmm... Looks like it won't matter if I go to lunch or not. The current one hour and twelve minute waiting period should give me plenty of time to go, eat and come back...

I was at 1 hour 12 minutes at noon exactly and it went down to 50 minutes at 12:05 and now back up to 1 hour 15 minutes at the moment.
