I recently came across a 1992 D quarter that appears to be copper. Can anyone tell me if this an error or if the coin has been altered?

Quarters were struck with a copper- nickel alloy. Your coin seems to exhibit extreme signs of corrosion.

CoinCollector2000, do you think the nickel has been corroded away?

I think it's been buried and probably dug up by a metal detector user.

It's possible to have a copper quarter. It would be a quarter that has lost both sides of it's clad layers. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-WASHIN...em461d3a7a9b

You can buy a gram scale on ebay to weigh your coin. I recommend the fast weigh scales because they are cheap and work really good for coins and precious metals.

If the clad layer was lost wouldn't the detail be considerably less then it is? Just wondering.

I was thinking the same thing. I ordered a scale, so if it weighs less than 5.7 grams, that would seem to indicate that it has been altered. If it weighs in at 5.7, do I have an error? Anyone?

No, missing clad layers do not affect the design. Check out the link I posted showing a graded example.

Your coin is post-strike damage, environmental issues. No missing clad layers here. It should weigh close to normal for a quarter.

Edit for spelling.

Send it in for a second opinion if you can afford it.

Slabbing would be a waste of money, when the Environmental Damage is so evident on a coin.

A miising clad layer normally affects the outside lettering of the coin with weakness along the rim. Although the lettering can be read, some of the lettering and rim will not fully strike up. It is rare to have both clad layers missing on the same coin.
