Hello, I bought this pretty worn nickel from 1912 today. The lady sold it as an 1912-S for $20 so I tried to take a chance on it. It is really hard to see but I think it has an S mark on it, what do you think? Thanks in advance!

Looks more like a D than an S to me.

I can't tell, but the most you can lose is $19.95!

For comparison purposes, see the photo below. The faint "S" perhaps seen in your photo doesn't seem to be in correct alignment or be the right size to my eyes. I think your coin is too worn to determine if a mint mark was once there.

You really only have three choices: 1). Send it in for TPG OR 2). Hit the mint mark area with some Nic-A-Date. That would pretty much tank any value that's left if it is an "S". OR 3). Leave it alone and put it in your album in the 12-S slot and keep telling yourself it's an "S". (That's what I'd do!)

Thanks a lot for all your thoughts and replies. As I am a little new to collecting american coins i'll put this one in my album as a 1912-S for now. I bought several other (cheap) coins from the old lady so I am nevertheless really happy!

Since you already bought it, be happy with it for now. Nice start for a set.

"Then lady sold as a 1912-s". Wow, I'd say she has a lot of nerve. It one thing to find it, but a little dodgy to sell it as such in that condition. Although is hard to tell from the pict what if any mint mark is there.
Supposedly there are only 5,000 of them around.
I would have put the $20 towards a more common coin in the series In a much better grade (or spend $10 on two)

It doesn't even look like 1912
Last digit looks like an 8
