I've recently been going to a new coin dealer, my old coin dealer used exclusively 2x2s for his coins, where as this one uses flips. How can I tell whether or not these contain PVC? He's been in the business for about 50 years, and his coins don't seem to have PVC damage, but I just want to be safe, is there any way to tell?

Smell test. The best way to do this is to take the flip, and open the pocket that's supposed to hold the coins, put your nose right up to it, and take a deep whiff. If it's PVC, you'll get a strong odor similar to a shower curtain or anything else made of cheap but flexible plastic. Mylar doesn't smell like anything really.

If he's been in business a long time I highly doubt he would be using anything dangerous to coins. However, just ask. Actually I always wonder about dealers that prefer plastic flips since they basically cost more, allow coins to move, can't write on them so need a separate paper for info. Always seams like a lot of work.

So much of this stuff is made in China, I doubt you can tell for sure if it is PVC free, regardless of what the mfg says.

A sort of really good point. Since plastic flips and even cardboard 2x2's don't have manufacturer's info on them you really don't know who made them and what they are made of. Some may but so far none of mine have any info on them. Even the cardboard 2x2's could be made of anything.
And when you think about it, neither do our coins. The too may be made in China. Our government may well be outsourcing the Minting of our coins and those Mint buildings are just one of the many coverups. Inside those Mint buildings there well may be gambling tables.

If they're super soft and pliable it's got PVC. The brittle stiff ones, more than likely not.

I would just put them in another storage medium when you get home if those make you uncomfortable.
