Just found this well worn dateless D mint Buffalo in my wife's piggy (well...Raggedy Ann) bank. From what's remaining of the reverse can you tell if it's a Type 1 or 2?

Buffalo-Nickel-Mystery,-Type-I-Or-2?

Wow, looks like I have some learning to do. Didn't know if the Type 2 ground line had worn off, but you all are positive that it's a Type 1. That's good enough for me. I really appreciate the help. Not a bad find, but would have been better if Type 2 No complaints. Fun anyway. Thanks again.

If had been a type 2 in could have been any date between 1913 and 1938. Type 2 coins were made the last part of 1913 all the way through 1938.

The type one coins are all dated 1913 (that's why we know what year it is even if the coin is "dateless"). The type ones were only made the first part of the year.

Type 1 buffaloes were minted in all three mints.
If you look look near the bottom of the coin, you can make out the "D."

wow...after I enalrged the image - I guess I can see the "D" mint mark. I really didnt see it before I zoomed in.

pretty cool coin. I would think this would get some consideration for a "low ball" coin. I doubt that this could get much more worn - and still be identifiable as to year and mint mark.

westernsky, yes I jumped the gun a little bit with my statement about the type 2. I do realize they were made in all the years. Guess I was drooling over the possibility of a 1913 Type 2

Is there something special about lowball coins? What qualifies a coin to be lowball?

Thanks for all the replies.

there is probably nothing "special" about a lowball coin.
i personally like them. they seem like they have a long and interesting history about them - and would probably have a pretty interesting life story to tell - if they could talk.

i believe some people have put together some rather impressive collections of low ball coins.

Maybe "lowball" should be added to the Glossary. Unless I missed it, it's not there. I like the word. I also like lowball coins.
