Lately this has been happening so much on ebay. I guess a lot of people are on the market for coins and buy whatever they can to an extent.

that is horrible

Only one 1849 Double Eagle confirmed to exist and it's in the Smithsonian (I've seen it), a second example rumored to exist but hasn't surfaced since it was struck.

A quick Google search would have easily shown any of those bidders that this hunk of junk (I can't call it a coin) is fake.

darn. I have seen those with 'copy' clearly marked on them sell for like $5(and even then I wouldnt buy it). That is obviously what this is, just without the 'copy' stamp.

I wonder if the high bidder is looking for an 1877 Half Union? Similar composition and condition.

The bidders probably read the title, description, and price. They then saw he had 100% feedback and bid on it without looking at the photos.

This coin is a fake no doubt. Maybe they saw an "error" on the coin. :)

You guys obviously have it all wrong. Gov't needs to reduce the debt so they started with the Smithsonian's holdings. Bet they thought they'd get more than that though.
