Lately this has been happening so much on ebay. I guess a lot of people are on the market for coins and buy whatever they can to an extent. |

 that is horrible Only one 1849 Double Eagle confirmed to exist and it's in the Smithsonian (I've seen it), a second example rumored to exist but hasn't surfaced since it was struck. A quick Google search would have easily shown any of those bidders that this hunk of junk (I can't call it a coin) is fake. |

darn. I have seen those with 'copy' clearly marked on them sell for like $5(and even then I wouldnt buy it). That is obviously what this is, just without the 'copy' stamp.

The bidders probably read the title, description, and price. They then saw he had 100% feedback and bid on it without looking at the photos.
This coin is a fake no doubt. Maybe they saw an "error" on the coin. :)

You guys obviously have it all wrong. Gov't needs to reduce the debt so they started with the Smithsonian's holdings. Bet they thought they'd get more than that though.
