Do cc morgans ever trade at melt/spot prices? Are there always going to be a minimum price for a cc regardless of it condition? I saw one today that looked as if it was sanded. You can see the face and date on the front, eagle on the back clearly. It was priced at $77. Believe me when I tell you someone took sandpaper to it. The date was 1883.
Is it worth buying because its a cc? Or is it for someone looking to fill a spot in a set at a low cost? Thanks

I bought one for melt once. It was harshly cleaned, had some grafitti, and slightly bent. It cost $17.50. Hope that helps!

You're only getting a CC for melt if somebody screws up. I bought a '90-CC in problem-free VG for $25 before, I consider that one of the better deals I've gotten on a CC Morgan when buying an individual coin.

Also, a piece of advice for you as a new collector; Don't buy problem coins. You'll regret it later. I do.

I'm amazed at how the prices of most CC dollars have shot up in the past 20 years! I've got a May 1992 issue of COINage in which a dealer advertises a 'borderline UNC' 1892CC for $145 and another dealer has an 1893CC in VG for $39 and another in Fine for $52!

CC coinage price is up enough over the last 20 years to match inflation. Most collector coins haven't kept up.

The cheapest cc Morgan I've gotten in the last year is an 1890 in Good for $38. Well above melt, but too hard for me to resist.

I've bought a 1883-CC for $30 when it's silver melt was around $24 but it was aG-3, and an 1890-CC in aG-03 for $32 when silver melt was around $20. My dealer once had a 1882-CC that had a lot of deep grafitti on both sides and that was priced right around melt. Usually though, they are always sold at a premium unless you get lucky at a pawn shop or something.

My cheapest prices were an 1878 in about G-4 for $35 and an 1890 about VG-8 for $47 including shipping

CC morgans have a unusually high price only because of demand.
