Unfortunately, I think you have bought a polished coin.

That's what another member said. How can you tell? Also, one such as this the value of the coin would be the melt value of silver than?

Do you see the Halo's around the stars, that's one evidence of a cleaned coin....also it just has that look. It's a look that you recognize after looking at many many many Morgan dollars. This was an AU coin that was polished to look MS....value no more than $20. I'd send it back as soon as possible....15 day return privilege on ebay.

First, pics of coins should be taken straight-on. Easy to hide flaws otherwise. This pic is the best; here you can see the true lack of cartwheel luster, or the way the luster seems to "roll" around the coin when rotated under light. That, and the obviously unfrosted devices are highly indicative of a polished coin. I stand by my earlier assertion of polished. Return it.

Chasingtailbar nailed it with the photo that shows the polishing the best. Absolutely no evidence of any cartwheel luster whatsoever that should be present on a coin with AU details like this Morgan. Polished. Melt value.

Best to avoid purchasing raw Morgans off of ebay until you feel comfortable grading coins. Even then some of the best get fooled from time to time trying to evaluate coins from "pics" on the internet. Many of the raw Morgans sold on ebay are not slabbed by a TPG for a good reason; case in point the one you are holding.

I'm learning as well on the CCF, how to identify a cleaned coin. I think I understand luster (at least when a coin is in my hands), but the first thing I see on this Morgan is age and discoloration around the outside raised edge, but nowhere else on the coin. Is this not also, an indication of cleaning?

Jimos, that can be the result of toning, or of mishandling but not necessarily a cleaning. So that isn't what you want to rely on. You want to learn how to identify original surfaces and luster versus cleaned surfaces and no luster, but lots of "flash".
