I get really confused about these pennies. I self-grade mostly on the wear on the leaves on the tree. It seems some specimens with sharper obverses have more wear on the leaves and some less wear. Did the dies wear out on these during the minting run? I found one at almost at the the bottom end of what I would accept for my collection, and by almost, it's a bit more worn than I really want, with little flat spots on the clusters of leaves. The seller claims "almost uncirculated" with no number. To me, this looks like a higher end XF. Am I being a bit harsh in my grading? The price doesn't seem too out of line, especially since seller is taking offers. Opinions? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171349878898...677726469767*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I saw that one too. It looks to have a bit more wear on the leaves. The problem with the one I referenced is the photo is awful.
Thanks for pointing it out.

The first one is a Bob Armstrong graded coin - maybe it looks better in hand with a weak strike? Hard to tell from pics, but isn't particularly attractive and that ebay seller has highish prices. You'll find something nice.

I wrote a very nice, non-confrontational message to the seller on ebay about the claimed condition, photos and price. I noted, that in my opinion, that it appeared to be at best mid-XF, and I think that's generous. I also asked if it could have been a weak strike. I received the following answer: "Hi Jim this coin is graded by Bob Armstrong he is well known and worked for ICCS in the past but is now retired for some time but still has a good eye .Phil" I decided a couple of things: You can't argue with opinions, I'm sure they run an honest business, mistakes happen (even with ICCS, which is my TPG of choice, despite the ugly flips), and sucky photos suck. I also decided that it isn't worth arguing anything about a coin that doesn't fit into my collection needs. There sure are a lot more sellers out there grossly misrepresenting coins much worse, like this one that could easily go on the "worst coins on ebay" thread. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1871-Prince...d-Coin-Canad d/321486676417?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIC.MBE&ao=1&asc=23491&meid=8931921253367452826&pid=100011&prg=10073&rk=3&rkt=10&sd=191270589823 My problem is, what to settle for at what price, when it shows up. These coins are all over the place.

Oh no, the link is bad. Here's a tinyurl link:

Well, it won't take the whole ebay link, and it doesn't allow tinyurl. I understand the need for security, so I cant post it, but the item description for searching is: "1871 Prince Edward Island 1 Large Cent World Coin - Canada - Holed" I can't even find an item number in the extremely long url This is NOT how I want to get 50 quality posts so I can sell and bid on items.

I have bought a few flips with Bob Armstrong's grades on them and I can say that he does in fact have a good eye and grades pretty conservatively....
At first I thought perhaps it's just the picture that isn't good... but I look at the flip and the staples and the details are there... in the photo.. just the coin really isn't "popping" like an A.U. coin should...
Other members here have given a few links to other coins..... I say wait it out a bit.. and find the one that really "pops"
