Was looking closer at the 2012-P Kennedy and I noticed some odd pattern to the luster. It's like it's all in lines radiating from the middle. I don't think it could be cleaning marks based on the pattern and the condition of the coin. Any ideas what causes this and it is at all a desirable "error"? It's on both sides, but strongest on the obverse.

Yup. I believe that's what's called the "orange peel" effect, caused by worn dies.

Yep, you can also see the effects on the outer edges of the lettering.

Die flow lines caused by Late Die State (LDS).

Is it considered an error or just along the lines of a crummy strike?

When a coin is struck, the pressure from the die on the planchet causes the silver/metal to flow outward towsrd the edge to fill the die. This is what causes that cartwheel luster on Morgans and Eagles. as the die get used more and more, the outward travel of the metal wears outward striations into the die. This is what causes those lines. It is not an error, just time to replace or polish the dies.

Thanks for the explanation.

So I'm assuming this is a less desirable coin trait (Even if a 2012 P isn't exactly a high value coin regardless).
