In another thread, sel_69l (from Australia) remarked:

"I always find it a little surprising that some .900 fine crown sized silver coins of the 19th Century, in Fine or better condition, can be bought for so little above melt value.

"It is for this reason that I have quite a few 19th Century crown sized silver coins; for me they are much more interesting than modern bullion silver."

I have found this to be so here in the U.S. also. Here's today's such acquisition, bought for a whole 50ยข above its bullion value. It's nothing fantastic, but I concur that something like this beats (not only from the standpoint of interest, but even pricewise as well) purchasing generic silver rounds and bars.

Five seems to be a magic number with this genre, in this case the monetary unit being the peseta, but elsewhere being marks, francs, lire, et cetera. Please feel free to share your bargain buys of this sort.

Except for the German mark, those are all coinages of the Latin Monetary Union, a 19th century attempt at introducing a Europe-wide interchangeable currency system - a "proto-euro", if you will. The Union was a French concept and the French franc was the standard coin which the other member-states copied.

Lucky Cuss, I agree that this would be a much more interesting way to accumulate silver than just buying bullion, but where do you find it at near melt prices? I don't remember seeing crowns like this in my LCS or on the websites that I've visited.

Which state are you in ? Perhaps I should consider moving . Here in the NC you will hardly find any crowns let alone around melt. Btw congrats on the pick.
