Do you folks think the gouges at 8 and 9 o'clock are bad enough to reduce this to a details-grade coin? This was purchased about 20 years ago as a BU coin.

They almost look like planchet flaws. But if they are indeed gouges, then it will grade details. However, that is not you main concern, there is hairlining all over the surface of your coin, indicating it was cleaned. It is still probably worth more than what you paid for it, since gold was hovering at about $200 an ounce 20 years ago.

How were done those scratches? I do not think because of cleaning. They have a bad looking, specially 8 o´clock one.

I see hairline scratches left and right fields of obverse. The gouges IMO are contact marks made when these coins were bagged.
I believe your coin has been cleaned at some point so yes..details.
AU+ details. Obverse shows more harsh than reverse.

I agree with AU details, cleaned on the above coin.
Looks rather weakly struck, especially around her left arm.

...

-Here is a pic below of my '24 for comparison..
Calling this one AU also. Very light rub on the high spots,
bump on her forehead and some minor rim bumps.

Better strike but I don't think mine will grade either..

I'm right with vermontensium on his assessment of the coin. The gouges may or may not garner a details grade, but the hairlines I'm seeing on the right and left obverse fields sure look like cleaning or wiping marks to me.

AU53 details (cleaned) is what I'd grade this one at.

I am forced to agree with Night-Hawk.
It DOES look weakly struck, especially around the area of the left arm.
Perhaps this coin should be weighed very accurately.

Double Eagles are very large heavy and soft coins. It takes very little to accumulate dent and scratch damage.

Are those scratches on the coin or the plastic holder it is in? The coin appears to be in a holder of some sort.

Just when I thought I got over the bug to buy some gold you guys have to start posting these. There are so few gold coins posted I thought I was safe but now I have that itch again.

the two gouges look like staple marks from another 2x2 in the soft gold.
