I have seen nice pictures posted from a cell phone camera.
Perhaps something like that would allow you to save faster
for better equipment.

It is not really about minimum requirements, it is about mastering the equipment you have at hand and getting the most out of it. The photo below was generated from an 8 year old 4MP camera pushed to its limits along with a little help from a 5x loupe, certainly not DSLR quality but it is a better macro photo than 99% of what you would see on ebay. The two big non-camera requirements would be a tripod/copy stand and high quality white light source(s) but without direct glare.

I agree with biokemist. You can take great pictures from a not-so-great camera if you master techniques such as lighting. I think lighting is more important than the camera, personally. There is a great thread about how to take quality photos with an iPhone, and the pictures are quite impressive.

Caution. If you are taking pics from a smart phone, your location may be contained within the photo. Probably no big deal on low priced coins, but a security risk on higher priced coins.

Good point. I'd say it's a security risk for just about any picture posted online. This can usually be disabled in settings, though.

If you are interested, here is a link to a discussion on USB scopes.

I have one of these my self and they can do a good job for under 100 bux With a stand.

It's what I use for now and I'm pleased with it,(my Avatar pic was taken with it), Although I am Upgrading now.

It's a LONG thread but I'm sure you can find some insight there.

Good luck and let us know what you work out.
