I have a proof morgan that when looped has small spots of toning around the face and hair. Also in the leaves on the rear. There are no signs of cleaning. I'm guessing chemical at one point. Fields are all prooflike. Would a TPG classify this as cleaned if a chemical was used? Thanks

Well, if the coin shows evidence of being cleaned and if they could tell the cleaning, then yes it would be labeled cleaned.
Pics?

Ant, do you have pics of the coin in question? Once we see we can tell you of it's cleaned or not.

A TPG will classify a coin as "Cleaned" when they feel like it. In a hobby filled with subjective judgments, cleaning is the most subjective judgment of them all and the TPG's exercise perfect subjectivity with it.

If there's the slightest question in their mind, they'll fail a coin for cleaning. The potential recovery against a coin they'd inappropriately graded too high is a major worry, as they've been burned in the past by such. I wish there were a more reliable answer to the question, but there isn't.
Rest in Peace

My personal favorite is "questionable surfaces".

My first answer would be " ..... when it has been cleaned "

But I agree with Ddave, it is subjective to the point were they will err on the side of caution.

Chemical dips are a different animal however, while a subtle wipedown years ago can often be missed by a TPG, a dip strips a layer of metal from the coin. It is hard to miss under magnification. I have yet to see a proof surface that has survived a dip.
