Ouch. You see that at times with later hammered coinage. Various theories why, but nobody is certain. Other series are more often found pierced (usually to wear as a keep-sake) than not. Smaller silver denominations are sometimes bent or folded.

While these things were clearly done while the coins circulated and so are part of their history, sadly it doesn't improve them in most people's eyes.

It looks fine to me but I prefer colonial silverware to colonial coins. Is it real? I'm used to seeing worse treatment given to counterfeits. Detested tyrants like Napoleon and Cromwell also get this kind of treatment.
