Saw this Horrible Science book in my sister's school library and took a quick photo of this page. I don't remember what's the title of it though. This looks fun, but I'm not going to try it on valuable coins because it involves wiping with a cloth, even though from this book's point of view it's no problem to wipe down and polish silverware. I would try if I had things like silver spoons, but unfortunately I don't.

By the way, if you're wondering about the writing style used and terms such as "pet adult", this series are comedy science novels aimed mostly at kids. The two there are recurring characters, the mad baron and his creation, both of which I don't remember the name.

Done correctly - with the right scientific rigor - you'd be astonished what this process can do for the right coin.

This is pretty much what I just did this week with the filthy 1951 Washington quarter I got in change. those it has sat in some tissue to dry after it was tamped dry with a microfiber cloth.

I do this with silver I pull from circulation sometimes, like the random 1958 dime that's seen more hands on it than a street walker.

I do this with Metal Detecting finds when the silver has been under water. They always turn extremely black. Sometimes I have to do it a few times. I never rub with a cloth. Always pat dry.

Hmm, I guess it's worth a shot when I have some blackened junk silver. I'll probably do this one day.

I think this only works for 90% and better silver items. It seems like I tried this with a rough looking 40% Kennedy and it streaked it horribly. Not that I really care since it is still silver, but it was a lesson learned.
