Just toning. Gold is common on the enders of these rolls.

Don't let your halves wrapped in the paper rolls. Now they could be beautiful toned but later they could get an ugly tone due to the sulfur of the paper even though they are clad (sulfur affect silver worst). The best way to store rolls is in plastic tubes.

The US Mint site doesn't show these (2E9) wrappers with the gold bar or gold rim on the paper as best I can tell. Does anyone have a mint roll of 2009 D halves to compare wrappers? Thanks!

Quote: So the paper the Mint uses is NOT Safe? I would not worry about the paper wrappers, the cardboard box would be much more likely to cause the toning.

Hi! I called around for Kennedy halves to use for Christmas puzzles for the kids. They are hard to find. I went to my local branch, and the lady told me she had no halves, because they "send them in" as soon as they get them, because nobody uses them. Anyhow, she said "But, since you asked, I have been keeping these, and you may be interested in these." She pulled out 2 rolls of 2009 Kennedy halves, one "P" and one "D". Original U. S. Mint rolls. Gold. I paid her face value, and she seemed pleased to find someone who would appreciate them. I had no idea what it was all about, but they are gold. Whether plated or whatever I don't know. Compared to everyone here I know almost nothing about coins, but I can say it is hard for me to believe these were not produced gold at the mint. I do understand toning, and these are evenly colored, and most of all, as shiney as a proof. I don't want to open the rolls, which of course would show whether they are gold all the way through. So that is my story for what it's worth. I just really doubt it is toning. Why would all of my halves in my coin "jar" form the last 10 years show no coloring even close to this?

Quote: So the paper the Mint uses is NOT Safe? No it isn't, but the rolls are worth more in the mint wrappers than in a plastic tube. So you can put them in plastic tubes for protection, but you throw away any "original Mint roll" premium to do so.

Toning usually affects the ones one the ends and the ones you put into albums.

@GC2009, I suggest you post a separate thread about your coins with good pics. If it's attached to this one, people will be less inclined to respond to you specifically. Me, I'm interested to see what yours look like. Also, being able to find original mint rolls from a bank is rare. Those things were sold from the mint at a premium over the face value. Perhaps a mod can split @GC's post from this one? Not sure if forum software allows this.

The white Mint box might be the one toning factor everyone is 'missing'. I almost always take my Mint rolls out of their boxes, to save storage space. The only Mint rolls I still have in their original boxes are an extra 2012-S Acadia roll and an extra pair of 2014 JFK rolls.

I love toned coins and never worry about toning. Not to worry though by the time those coins turn black from toning our children's children will be dead and buried. Myself I agree with you not to disturb the rolls by opening them, leave them be and enjoy them as they are. Wish they were mine so be happy cause other people would.

Some toning isn't pretty if it was done to make it look like toning. Here is a few examples from a roll that was ruined probably with soapy water and a candle: Note the other colors that toning should have? Often coins tone in an album. Affecting the coin to turn a different color: [img[ https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...D_CENT_1.jpg Toned in a Dansco album
