Earlier today, my wife and I hit up the local Wichita coinshow. I have been to a few shows lately and this was her first. She is a bit of a collector of Mercury dimes and walkers, we are working on these sets together, and we went into the show hoping to pick up a couple inexpensive examples for those sets. First we scouted out the Walkers and found 1936 and 1936-S for a total of $11. Both were nice mid-grades probably in the VF-20 range. After that it was time to look for the mercs. We found a nice VF 1929-S dime for 3 bucks. This one had real nice unique pink/orange toning on both sides.

After this I was talking a bit to another dealer and saw a bin of 2 dollar mercs. My wife and I thumbed through them as we chatted with the dealer. I found a 1930-s in about VG, which is a decent date and I set that aside. Not seeing much else, I was ready to pay, when my wife said, "This one is nice and shiny". She has a tendency to like very bright coins, (sometimes even if they are cleaned,) so I was a bit pessimistic at first. I took a look at the coin and it was a very nice 1943, with full luster. We already had the date but at 2 dollars you can't go wrong. I handed it to the dealer to buy it, and he said, "Hmm... nice coin, I think I should have looked through these bargain bin coins better. I got 'em cheap so thats good, but you got a nice deal today". He then asked if we wanted the coins in 2x2s, and took the time to smooth out the staples, despite the small purchase.

Looking at the 1943 merc at home under the light and with the magnifyer there are very few marks on the coin. I estimate it at MS-64. I guess from now on I'll pay a little more attention to the bargain bins. It was a nice find by my wife, and was a good upgrade to the AU-50/55 example that we had!

It sounds like you both had awesome finds and great times. You can't go wrong with a good looking coin.

I found an interesting mint mark on a 1943-S Dime.

I am more of a Lincoln specialist, but I like the design of Mercury dimes the best of the U.S. coins. A lot in circulation when I was a kid. Why didn't I save them all....

Nice story! Coin shows are fun, especially when you have someone to go with. Much more fun than ebay these days.

I know, I know! Unfortunately my pictures tend to lack quality due to very cheap digital camera and my low skills. I will try tomorrow night if I have time. Going away for vacation later this week and I am pretty pressed for time this week, (and I seem to be doing a good job of spending time online instead of preparing for my trip).

Here is a tip about Mercury dimes. IF you have them in a 2x2 or in an Album where you can see both sides you may notice that a large amount of them are tilted a little or a real lot. This is very common to have rotated reverses on Mercury dimes. The reason I mention this is some time back I was able to acquire many at extreame cheap prices by pointing that out to a dealer. However, now with this error craze on coins this feature is starting to become a large increase in value. The more the rotation, the higher the price. Check out your Mercury dimes. And always watch for that evasive 42D/41. I found two in a junk box not long ago for 0.90 each.
