Hi. I'm new. I have a tiny gold hexagonal shaped "coin"? that, believe it or not, I found while gold panning in Burgdorf, Idaho. It was found in a small stream. Amazing, since it is so tiny.... 4 mm x 3 mm and very thin. It has a raised number 5 with horizontal raised lines and border. The back is blank. There is no doubt that it is gold, as it is bright yellow with no corrosion and sunk to the bottom of my gold pan! I found it in 2005 and tried to find someone who could help me to identify what exactly it is. I was told that 5 cent gold pieces were never made, it must be some kind of ammunition casing, or whatever...blah blah
Anyway, I know I have something special and I wish I could find some help with this. Does anyone out there have any information about these things? I will try to post a picture tomorrow if anyone would like to see it.

I was at a coin show and saw a coin that might've been exactly what you're talking about. He said it wasn't american and was worth about 20 bucks in gold, but the thing was, his was counterfeit. I have no idea what it is, but if it's real, good luck finding info. Maybe numista.com can help you get some info based on their advanced search!

I am interested that you found it in Burgdorf, as I live in Idaho. Off had what you are describing sounds like a worn fractional territory gold piece. These were later mass produced with slightly different designs as souvenirs, (but still has some gold in them).

If you could post pictures that would be really helpful in identification.
