Anybody out there got any idea the meaning of this engraving on the reverse of this 1913 Buffalo? I ran across it at a local coin show this past weekend.

I know the balance scale is a symbol for "equal". Evidently, it was holed to be worn as a pendent or on a charm bracelet. The engraved date is 3/23/13. I've seen 1913 hobos before but nothing like this. I am leaning towards calling it a love token.

Probably. 3/23/13 is too early for the type II's to be out and he probably couldn't get his hands on a 1913 V nickel.

Interesting. I wonder if 3/23/1913 is really the engraving date or is just meant to commemorate that date? B and G? Someones initials? Bad and Good? Boy or Girl?

I can picture a dad out in the waiting room of a hospital on 3/23/1913 engraving this while his wife was in another room giving birth (no lamaze classes back then, and no men in the delivery room).

I believe that the 3.23 is the weight of the nickel in "pennyweights" if there wasn't a hole, and if you do the conversion into grams it equals 5 grams, the scale I have no idea on its probably a scale company's logo. and the ("13) is probably the year. And for some reason I feel this may be Masonic related but that's just a guess.

It looks like "ink" on the top layer of the mylar of the 2 x 2.

Meaning behind it...no idea.

It (the balance scale, initials, and date) is engraved into the reverse of the coin. It is not written on the Mylar.

Mutilated nickel. Too bad. Diminished value in my opinion.

I like it. I have a thing for coins with holes. It personalizes the history of the coin.
