Looks like a genuine 1909 cent but clearly an added S. It's way off...

Quote: how can you tell? by the date? any other tips? I spend a lot of time looking at dates on coins--I collect date varieties, RPDs, MPDs, overdates.  Unless there's been some really harsh wear or corrosion, IHCs dates are normally much more sharply defined. For most years, there is only one style of date punch. Compared to a certified IHC (top), the ebay is without a doubt a fake. But, it's still fooling some bidders.

The 1871 looks like a spark erosion counterfeit. You can tell by the porosity by the legend and the smooth fields by contrast. As for the 1909 that's the worst added S I've seen in a while.
