Sometimes I hate me. This is one of those times.
While combing through a bunch of dateless
Buffalo nickels I saw one that attracted my attention due to slightly wider hair ribbons and what looked like it might be a little doubling along the topmost feather.
I stared at this nickel so long and so hard, under numerous types of light, that the sheer intensity of my gaze felt like it might be wearing the nickel down more than it already was.
I found a dateless 1916
DDO several years ago and when I found THAT one there was no doubt in my mind what I had. Doubling on the two long feathers, doubling of the hair ribbons, doubling along the brow and the upper lip...I sent it in and ANACS confirmed it.
The strongest evidence on this one was that topmost feather, and I'd seen that before on lots of nickels that weren't DDOs. The hair ribbons on this one were wider than usual, but not doubled - and the wideness looked like it could have been wear-induced. Also - in the area of where the 4th digit of the date would be there was a dark little depression right where the upper oval of an "8" could be.
I should have taken a "before" picture, and that's actually a second reason that I hate me today. The big reason, however, is that I gave in to my doubts, and did an acid test of the date area.
It's a weird sensation knowing, for a FACT, that you have a great coin while also knowing that you sort of ruined it.
I hate me.
