I won this cent on ebay. It was listed as struck through a die cap but I suspected that was incorrect. I think it was struck through a thin split planchet between this coin and the reverse die. Notice the striations from the split planchet that were transferred to this coin. What do you think?

Probably way off on this, so wait for the more knowledgeable.

Could it be an early die cap that released after two or three strikes? Seems more struck through die caps show up than die caps so I'm still learning. Thanks, Doug.

Looks like a split planchet had something to do with it. Whats the weight maybe it is the split planchet(after strike), if not then your explanation sounds reasonable.

Good question. The weight is 3.05g so it is well within the tolerance of the correct weight.

I agree with pyrbob. The obverse rim shows strong finning, which is consistent with the increased effective striking pressure generated by the underlying planchet.
Error coin writer and researcher.

Thanks Mike. You are right, there is a high fin on the obverse side. I thought that's what it was but I wasn't 100% sure. I assume struck through a split planchet is not as common as the struck through die cap error.
