I have a 1963 Mexican memorial tribute medal of president Kennedy. The problem is there seems to be a "spelling mistake" on the reverse. The word "CAREERS" honestly looks like it is spelled "CARFERS." In my research, I found only one other example under an old auction result from 2008. The coin sold for $29. The photo associated with that sale clearly shows the word spelled correctly. I can find no references claiming there was an error variety of this medal. I've really looked hard at the coin to see if I can detect any attempt at alteration, but can not. The coin does hint that it may have been cleaned or dipped, common practice to cover an alteration. I also looked for the filled die possibility, but dang, it is just soooo clean at the point of the error. Who would bother to alter such an inexpensive coin? That doesn't make sense either. Is the coin rare? Is this some sort of practice strike that was quicly ID'd as defective, yet this one survived somehow? I'm stumped. Too little information to go on. Any thoughts of yours would be enjoyable to read. See the four photos I'm going to attach to this post. Mike R
Possibly the bottom bar of the "E" got filled with grease or some other material, but it does look like a perfect "F", so I'd come back to your surmise that it was an early error (which could've been easily corrected later).
This is nothing that anybody could sufficiently profit from going through the trouble of forging it, so I wouldn't be thinking along those lines. Even as an error, I can't imagine there'd be much of a premium attached to something like this on that basis.
