Hi Guys, I purchased a denarius on ebay and I'm trying to I.D it. From what I've been able to ascertain the coin could possibly be RIC 50. However, I have not been able to find an image of RIC 50 (Cohen 386). I was wondering if someone would be able to assist on the identification: Denarius, Septimius Severus, Rome mint, 194-195 AD Obv. L SEPT SEV PE - " RT AUG IMP IIII Laureate head right Rev. PM TRP II - " COS II PP Emperor in military dress standing left, chlamys over left shoulder, left hand holding inverted spear resting on the ground, right holding globe Cohen 386, RIC 50 There also seems to be a bit of contention as to the rarity of this coin. If anyone can shed some light - that would be great! Edited by OneDollarMule 08/25/2014 09:47 am

If RIC says something is rare, it is nice to record it on the label, however, RIC is hugely out of date. Since it was written most of eastern europe has been dug up and gazillions of coins found.

Thanks for the replies. Yup pishpash I 100% agree. I just haven't been able to track down another image of this coin. If anyone does have another image, it would be great to compare (considering the lower end of the grading scale my coin represents).

my reply from another topic--
It is rated as rare in RIC IV, but you need to understand the rarity system. In this case, rare is not that "rare." There are several degrees of rarity which are common, C2, C3, scarce, rare,r2, r3, r4, r5. The preface for this volume does not explain exactly how many of each coin was noted, but here is the list from RIC VII--
c3= 41- c2= 31- 40 c1= 22- 30 s= 16- 21 r1= 11-15 r2= 7-10 r3= 4-6 r4= 2-3 r5= unique
These numbers only account for coins that the author saw in museums,some private collections, published hoard material etc., and can't account for every example existing at the time and, of course, those yet to be found. Rarity rarities are relative guides and need to be considered carefully in light of how much time has passed since the book was written.

Hello all! While I was attempting to research a denarius of Septimius Severus I was thinking of buying, I stumbled upon this thread during a Google Image search, and it was still the only photographic evidence of the coin I could find, even after over two years! Anyway, I thought I'd share my own coin in the interest of posterity, as well as doubling the images of it Google has to offer, regardless of the actual rarity. I haven't taken my own pictures, so I'll use the seller's images. I hope that's okay.

 to the community Most new collectors of ancient coins don't take the time to do their own research. Glad to see that you are willing to do that and found this old thread. You will find a sticky section here titled Books, Downloads and Websites. I recommend you check it out, there is a lot of useful information available there.

@Naughtius Maximus, first welcome to CCF. Second, thanks for posting the update. It is always interesting to see when some of these old threads pop up anew.
