Good morning,

Due to some recent circumstances, I need tto crack open at least 6 (and possibly as many as 16) Slabbed Morgans, & I want to submit them to NGC, as I believe that their Morgan silver dollar grading aligns best with how I perceive them. Although small, I have enough coins to at least compare 10 slabbed coins from each of the 3 main TPG's, and I reallty like the way NGC grades them - it seems like "eye-appeal" matters most to NGC, at least more so than the other TPG's.

Anyway, NGC will not crossover any other company besides PCGS (unless I am mistaken), so I was wondering if there is a safe, effective way to crack these open. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

I also hope this is not perceived as unethical on this board; I have read several arguments for and against on the board, so I am not making a case either way - in fact, I always told myself I would never do this.... circumstances have changed!

they can do it for you if you send in a form...

Quote:
Coins graded by services other than PCGS are not eligible for the CrossOver service. They must be removed from their holder prior to being graded. NGC can remove coins from these holders when submissions are accompanied by a coin removal consent form [pdf]. A form must accompany each applicable submission invoice.

I use a dyke cutter right below the label on each side of the slab, PCGS, ANCS, and ICG. Always works great, I get a clean break usually and the coin comes right out. With NGC I just hammer them open wrapped in a towel. So far (knock on wood) I've never damaged a coin by removing it from a slab.

I use the hammer method. I don't like it, but it is the best way I have found. I don't think there is a 100% "safe" method.

I use the hammer method, over a blanket on a hard surface, hitting on the corners. Some of the gold ANACS holders you can peel apart with your hands. It's your coin, you can do whatever you want to with it.

The method I have found that works good may sound odd, but using a handheld can opener is what I use. I just latch it to the top where the label is and cut the top off.

A bench mounted vise works great. Just lay the holder in (I usually do it so the coin is heads up) snug up the jaws and slowly turn the handle. Many times the holder breaks cleanly in two. Then put the coin in a dansco.

Only 10 more to fill my Uncirculated Eagle back Washington quarters Dansco.
