Are all Peace dollars from this year (1921) high relief? Any opinions about this coin? I wanted to buy it but know nothing about Peace dollars. It looks to me like it was cleaned at one point in time. I'm sure that hurts the value, but by how much? Thanks

I'm pretty sure all 1921 Peace dollars are high relief. If I were you, I would pass on this cleaned one. You can get problem-free VF examples for less than $100. Just my humble opinion.

1921 is one of the key dates in the set as it is the only one with the HR relief design and has fairly low mintage. That one looks pretty rough, though.

You are right wheatchaser, I looked on ebay and there are tons of them problem free. I dont really need it, but the guy was selling it and I thought the price was pretty cheap. I didnt know you could get them uncleaned for that price. I have 2 but they are heavily toned. One is black. But it looks like it is a high 63-64. Do you think it would still be desirable if I chose to sell it in the future? A high relief, high grade black Peace dollar?

Depends. What you're describing could be a coin with environmental damage, or just dark toning. Only pics will show for sure.

Its def toning not enviromental damage. Ill take some pics. This is one of grandpas coins, not a mark anywhere on it. I dont even see bag marks. But boy is it black. Its actually kind of cool imo

1921 is not the only year HR Peace dollars were made.

I was pretty sure they melted all the 1922's except for a handful of proofs. Or did you mean something else?

I think John is alluding to the few high relief specimen strikes known.

This one looks AU details, polished. I'd value it $50-$70.

I'm working on a set of very dark toned Peace dollars.
PM me if you would consider selling or swapping your '21.

It's a pretty good strike and about an AU. I'd hold out for one with better details. Wait for a sharp AU. Mint state is no guarantee of sharp detail, and carries a big premium. This will give you an idea - OK, but not nearly as sharp as my 1925 avatar. Every once in a while I see a better 1921 on ebay, usually in the $1000 range, but nothing right now.

I put the better ones in an album. The rest are doubles of these years. Some triple. And of course, a bunch that are circulated.
