Both coins are 1859 DP9 #4 #1 how would you grade these 2 coins? #2 If you were to only keep one witch one would it be and why? colonialtokens Pillar of the Community United States 840 Posts	Posted 09/01/2014 4:40 pm Both are of comparable grade. DP #4 / Haxby 232 E 25a. The upper photo has some scrape on Victoria's neck. The lower photo is of a later die-state. The Die-Crack to leaf 7 progresses into leaf 6. I prefer the latter. doug Report this Post to the Staff

Both of your coins also show something worth knowing about this die, in later die states it developed a die collapse right at the bottom of the 9. What looks like wear on your 9s is the begining of that die collapse. I have several coins made by this die where the 9 has almost completely dissapered. That being the case I wonder if a worn looking 9 should affect grade since on some coins it would have looked worn when the rest of the coin was mint state. Ed Report this Post to the Staff

Osiris Valued Member Canada 118 Posts	Posted 09/05/2014 1:11 pm I'm no 1859 LC expert, but would have graded the second coin higher than the first. There is more noticeable wear to the left of the ear in the first coin, for instance, and in a few other places. VF30 to EF40 is my view as well. Otherwise, the second coin is the keeper for reasons already given. Report this Post to the Staff
