Looks real to me. There are versions in various metals, bronze aluminium and nickel both weighing 12g and aluminium at 3.5g. Nice coins when in decent grade. More here: http://www.cgb.fr/boutique,modernes.html

They seem to sell on ebay for around £7. US$10 maybe.

Apparently, though not my area of expertise I'm afraid. The price will of course depend on the state (grade) of the coin.
Congratulations if you have one!

The April 2014 issue of Monnaie Magazine values this coin at:
Fine - 1800 euros VF - 3000 euros EF - 5000 euros
My 1989 edition of the French Gadoury catalogue states that only three examples are known and values the coin as follows:
Fine - 9000 francs VF - 15000 francs EF - 22000 francs
I think it would definitely be worth getting this coin authenticated!

Thank you for the information! Where is best to go for authentication?

Quote: Where is best to go for authentication? Sorry, Tish - as you're based in the USA, I'm not sure. Perhaps some US based member can recommend one of the TPGs for foreign coins?

In 1939, nearly all 5 Francs coins of the Lavrillier type were in an aluminium-brass alloy. They have the same weight, but a thickness of 2.3 mm on account of the lower density of the alloy. Using these coins a counterfeit 'nickel' may be forged, plating it with a white metal. Even if it's 'well made' (with the design not blurred in the process) you would notice the 2.3 mm thickness and it should be non-magnetic.
Using an alu-brass original to make a 'transfer die' set, anything is possible. It would however be an expensive facility for a 'market' that can only be there while the counterfeit remains rare itself.
