1957 Jefferson nickel SmallStar TDO Transitional Die Obverse

I see this variety being sold by JT Stanton from the Cherry Pickers Guide on ebay.

There have been some reported by collectors that they found some 1957 coins with the small star.

This means the small star proof Transitional Die Obverse has been verified.

This is not in the current Cherry picker's guide but I would imagine it will be going forward..

Basically the star between LIBERTY and 1957 (DATE) is typically a much larger for this date and 1958.

But there is at least one die with small star, which was typical until 1956, and starting again in 1959 after being refined.

With this variety being so similar to the Lincoln cents series Wide AM and Close AM which are always fun to search for.

This should be a fun one to look for in the Jefferson nickel series.

More detailed info on his ebay listing with pictures

Looks like someone is cashing in on a die polishing that reduced the field, making the star smaller. Just another over polished die that is bilking the coin collecting community.

You'll notice it's not only the star that is weaker on the "small star" coin, but the adjacent date and lettering as well. Just a minor case of polished dies and nothing more.

I thought the extra space between the letters looked odd...

I seen another one on a forum somewhere without the spacing spacing between the RTY.

I found this one but originally after seeing that one I thought the one I have was wrong.

but after hearing Coop's explanation..

It makes sense, But if I was trying to match mine to the over polished die. It might be possible that mine just might be right?

It is the smaller star. I wont get my hopes up.. but that would be cool ...not a expert just a CCF taught newbie...
