Whilst on a recent visit to the US, we happened to go by a Taco Bell restaurant. My family enjoyed the food, and I took the opportunity to grab a few of their brown napkins. I was just curious since I have heard they 'induce' toning of coins wrapped with them. Is this true?

Your family enjoyed the food? Are you sure?

Regarding the food, my wife and son said it was OK. It is a novelty for us. I did not try it myself, though.

Well id like to see it if its true. As I wouldn't risk ruining even a junk silver coin on said experiment. Post pics b4\after please. This sounds like at least a couple weeks\months process.

From what I remember reading here several times always by biokemist6(not 100% sure spelling of the nick) low cost unbleached paper products can produce higher amounts of sulfur that causes toning. Some older brands of cheaply made albums do the same thing. I had some nickel in cheap old flips they are all blue and purple..

Those Napkins there like anywhere are not made by Taco Bell. They buy them from other places so what you got today may well not be the same tomorrow. And this would mean they may or may not have an effect on your coins. I'd be more afraid of what their food does to your coins or your stomach. You came to the USA and end up eating there? Your family enjoyed the food? Just where or what have you been eating at home?

In case you are not getting the joke, Taco Bell has a reputation in the USA for serving food that isn't all that good, which will haunt you when it is time to go to the bathroom unless you have a colon made of forged steel.

Yoshi, actually I do not eat fast food, here or there. We were overwhelmed by the number of fast food places, but my family seemed happy to try out the various locations. We all survived the trip! The extremely hot weather we had in Florida, well, that was another matter...

Germanics, I live in South Florida. It's awesome here! HOT HOT HOT all year round. And I came from NY and DO NOT miss the snow at all. Any fast food is horrible for your body. It makes you fat, gives you heart disease to say the least and I'm sure there are a thousand other reasons to avoid! nasty. Currently I am running what I call "The Great Coin Experiment". I happen to have multiple mint sets from the 50's that came in what I am positive is sulfur/acid based paper or whatever it is in it that made the toning which is notorious from that era on coins. I have removed the coins and replaced with coins I want to tone. And not junk silver. I have grabbed some Liberty Seated dimes, Barber dimes, Seated quarters etc... All uncleaned, original EF/AU/MS and I have pressed them into those slots of the mint set. I have them in a plastic zip lock bag sitting up on an 8 foot ledge with a picture window that faces due West. I am planning on checking in monthly to see toning process. I have no fears this will ruin the coins unless you all tell me to get them the heck out of there ASAP.

The problem you may have with that method is that all the acid and sulfurs may have already leached out over 60 years, or at least the major concentration. That cardboard may be quite inert now.

I am currently "cooking/toning" some cleaned coins (SLQ & Morgan dollar)and one MS Morgan using Taco Bell napkins in my attic. Here in SW FL it gets hot enough up there to cook chicken and so far I have had some interesting results. Starting to get some blue/purple toning but also some mottled golden/brown. I guess time will tell. This experiment has been ongoing for 6+ months now. I also recently put some silver bullion (mint state) up in the inferno in some old felt lined jewelry boxes. My disclaimer is I am just amusing myself here. I would also not attempt this with something of value. As for Taco Bell I would not eat that crap, my brother in law gets the napkins for me. We make our own Mexican food which is delish, I would not feed Taco Bell to my dogs.

I've got a cleaned 1917 TYP1 SLQ. We gotta try this out, it can't look any uglier.

As far as American fast food goes, I'd try Chic Fil A and In n Out Burger and that's about it.
