1996-P Washington quarter with Feeder-Fingers By Eye

Nothing special just a interesting find today going through some quarters I got in my change.

The picture dont show it as well as it looks but the area by the eye is not raised to normal height it is not a hit its level with the flat area of the coin and there appears to be feeder finger marks inside that area?

picture show the missing area that kind of looks grease filled I had a hard time to get a photo of it didn't work with my normal background and lighting.

I know its not the same one in the Cherry Pickers Guide there is one with the finger finger damage in same area but goes to behind head and is higher on the eyes.

------------------ Left coin Has Error ------------------ Right coin is normal 1996-p

That is die polishing. The field is being reduced and now the next layer of the field/mid devices are being removed. Thus the lines where the mid design should be. This is not Feeder Finger Damage. Because of clashes (plural) the polishing is affecting these shallow devices. Feeder find damage is usually in a straight line across the die in a 45 degree angle. It was at first thought it would be in c a certain direction:

And most of the time it is in this direction. NE/SE. But recently we've seen some in the opposite direction.

On the 30-50's wheat cents I've seen this die damage running in a N/S direction.

But it looks like a heavy die polishing in that area. Eventually you can even see it bottom out as part of the field.

Thanks Coop.. I see that now I have a few Lincoln Cent like that...

Question in general not for any particular coin

so when a area is reduced down it can be either PMD, lamination, die polishing or gre ASE

What happens to the die will not be PMD. That is just die polishing/damage that show on the coins.
I think of PMD/PSD as something that happens to the coin after it is struck. Circulation/abuse/damage can happen to coins before they leave the mint. Even when coins are leaving the machine they can damage the coin. When you see the videos of the coins dropping out of the machine, you can see that happening. I prefer the term PSD (Post Strike Damage) over PMD (Post Mint Damage) because of the coins dropping into the bins do damage the coins.
Lamination is a planchet issue and sometimes an issue of some flakes of metal/plating preventing a full strike. Some laminations happen beofre the coin is struck, some after the coin is struck. Some cling onto the coin. Most are not real valuable, but some are worth a lot. Here is one that received 5 figures for this error:

Most cents are in the 50 cent and up range. Others go higher. Depending on years/how much is laminated.

Actually, this could be accidental die abrasion resulting from Feeder Finger Damage. The parallel, unidirectional striations are consistent with this interpretation, as is the presence of abrasion in front of and behind Washington's head. See this article:
