Ok so I went to the Long Beach Coin show and after doing the
ebay thing and having to do returns etc. I decided to see what I could get into at the show and not buy on
ebay until I know of the trusted sellers members here recommend.
So I found this booth with an old man and his wife. I saw that they had a lot of rolls and tubes of solid years. What caught my attention were two tubes barked "'09 VDB". First thing that runs through my mind is these were probably packed when everyone assumed '09 was 1909... Sure enough they were packed years ago and put away.
I ask how much, the gentleman pulls out his book and gives me good bid price $500. Call me crazy but I trusted him even more when he told me that they didn't use a credit card machine. I told him I would go to the ATM and be right back. I hurry as the pace is emptying and trek all the way across the hall to ATM (I had reached my withrdawal limit on one card and was short $10 even with the other one on me!) I make my way back in a hurry and figuring out a nice way to ask for $10 off, the guy was pretty set on $500 he said they were mostly fine and better. So I get there and they remember my name like places did in the old days (the 80's for me, LOL). He begrudgingly accepts my offer of $490 and I choose one of the two, politely without opening them, only an outside cursory look...
I walk a few booths down make a left them a right, lol so as not to alert them that I was checking what they gave me... I really just wanted to check out the top few and wait till I got home for a detailed inspection. I see that the first one had a very heavy bold date and the Liberty letters were fat and wavy on the sides, from my new knowledge I've gained from the members here and the wealth of information here.... I said hmmm I think that's a double die, let me check another one, and the next one also looked really heavy... The next was the same and I just put them away and said I have to see if there are known varieties and what the indicators were.
So I get home and do some research and I find the 1909-VDB
DDOFS1101 and FS1102. So I go to the tube and I start puling the coins out one at a time and one after the next they look like one of the two varieties. Now It wasn't EVERY coin but I would say the majority have font issues and I think fall under one of the two varieties.
I'm a novice so I'm not sure about anything really, I checked for the second nine and the B & R and checked for a die clash mark(whatever that is!) under his chin... Those were the ways I would determine, after deciding they looked like DD, if they were type 2 or not.
So after all the talking I would like to show you my find and ask for your opinions on how many you think are DDOs and what I should do next. I was thinking of getting them graded but who offers a bulk rate on 50? Or should I give them to a company I just consigned 50 1955-S BU to be graded then auctioned?
Anyway, I hope I'm right, at least on a few of these! I would attribute this to these varieties being recently certified? I read that somewhere just now.
I'll be posting a few in the grading area to see what you guys think. Please let me know what you guys think and if you have suggestions on which ones to post in the grading area.
