1940 pennies exist with no dot (Melbourne), dot after Y (Perth) and dot between KG (K.G)(also Perth Mint). The K.G is the scarcest, it also exists for 1941 but by 1942 all Perth pennies were dot after Y except during 1952 when it moved to after the third A.

His coin has Melbourne mint characteristics. I'm not aware of a dot after the Y variety for the 1940 but after looking through my photo archives I came across this coin which has the dot in roughly the same place:
1940-Dot-After-Y

It's possible bkh's coin has post-mint damage and this one is just a tone spot, but if it is a variety it's much scarcer than the KG.

Either way both coins came out of the Melbourne mint.

Is this dot or just post mint damage?

nealenfendi, wwwww

there is not dot after Y 1940 as per info below:

A dot after the Y of Penny indicates Perth Mint and was used from 1941 to 1945, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1951 and 1955 to 1964 inclusive. If this is correct.

Truthfully I doubt that anyone can be certain about the details for the dot positions for 1940-41. The mint records were inadequate and Perth stepped in at short notice to strike the pennies (using Melbourne supplied dies. Melbourne marked the dies and just as for 1919-1920 they didn't record their reasoning for the dots.
Even the '41 High Dot is held by many to be a mint mark (probably just a die chip).
