Hello - Tom here - I am not a collector but need some advice - a good friend turns 50 this year; I'd like to get him a collectible $50 bill - need advice and recommendations as to what would be a nice gift - he's not a collector either -so maybe something of a novelty. My budget would be $200 give or take. thank you !

Welcome to CCF, Tom. I've taken the liberty of putting your question in front of a more specialized audience, so you'll get better advice.

That price point is basically impossible for anything interesting. Let me suggest you up it a bit and get something like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FR-1200-192...em3a94956332

Shop around and you may find one around $300 or so. Large size, gold certificate. Pretty darn cool. These were also illegal to own at one time, so add that to the cool factor.

If you want under $200, this is not a bad option. Also pretty cool. Plus it is a 1864 issue, exactly 150 years old this year.

Does it HAVE to be a U.S. banknote?

You could probably pick up something very decent for less and it would be a novelty as it's also NOT an american banknote.

This is what I had in mind...

121431051542

or

121431076106

or the issue that was used when he was born was ...

221521263897 - there is also a modified version of this note.. that looks similar in colour and design just there isn't the "devils face" in the hair...

(so that has an interesting back story to it as well...)

Thanks all for the suggestions - I can go higher on my budget - $300 would be ok; and thanks for suggestion of non-US currency - that is also an option

Good luck... I suppose it depends on what message you're trying to convey with the gift. If it's simply a novelty... perhaps spending less on this item but getting something more meaningful and personal will be appropriate (as you said neither you or the recipient of the gift are collectors) Of course if you're looking for an item that will hold some collector value, there are options as well.. but the price point can REALLY get higher and higher....

I personally think it's great way to celebrate someone's 50th! So kudos to you!

Go with my first suggestion, a large size 1914 USA $50 gold note. $300 should get a decent example, and it is a good value. Plus it is 100 years old and was 50 year old when your friend was born.
