After thoroughly enjoying the "86 Days of US Type Coins" thread, which will be wrapping up in a week or so, I searched to see if there had ever been a similar thread for paper money. I found a few posts about organizing type sets of currency, but nothing on the scale of what I would like to see. I know quite a few CCF members have some AMAZING notes to display.
Therefore ... without further ado ... I propose that this thread become the first official "Days Of" thread for anyone who has completed, or is in the process of completing, a "type set" of banknotes. I do not own a specimen of all of these notes right now, but I will be posting what I have, both the nicer pieces and the rags.
The following is the timeline I have in mind right now, but I'm open to suggestions before this whole thing gets rolling. Anything listed here is subject to change:
Day One: Series 1862 $1 US Note Day Two: Series 1869 $1 Rainbow US Note Day Three: Series 1874/1875/1878 $1 Flaming Red Seal US Note Day Four: Series 1880 $1 Brown or Red Seal US Note Day Five: Series 1886/1891 $1 Martha Silver Certificate Day Six: Series 1890/1891 $1 Stanton Treasury Coin Note Day Seven: Series 1896 $1 Educational Silver Certificate Day Eight: Series 1899 $1 Black Eagle Silver Certificate Day Nine: Series 1917 $1 US Note Day Ten: Series 1918 $1 Screaming Eagle FRBN Day Eleven: Series 1923 $1 Silver Certificate (blue seal) Day Twelve: Series 1923 $1 Silver Certificate (red seal) Day Thirteen: Series 1928 $1 Funnyback (blue seal) Day Fourteen: Series 1928 $1 Funnyback (red seal) Day Fifteen: Series 1934 $1 Funnyback Day Sixteen: Series 1935 $1 Silver Certificate Day Seventeen: Series 1935 $1 Hawaii Day Eighteen: Series 1935 $1 North Africa Day Nineteen: Series 1957 $1 Silver Certificate Day Twenty: Series 1963 $1 FRN
Naturally, there are several other type notes that could be included on this list, including experimental issues, mules, mottos, sub-series (A, B, etc.), signature combos, and many others. As has been done on the "days of" type coins thread, these notes can be posted on the day corresponding to the most similar major type note.
So ... Who's On Board?
Suggestions? ... Criticisms? ... When to Start?

Cool idea. My first question is...when (what date) is Day One?

How about starting on Sunday, August 17? If interested members seem to agree with that as a start date, I'll post an updated schedule on Saturday night with the dates beside the corresponding notes for quick reference. Go ahead, let all the type note collectors you know hear about this thread!

I'd love to participate! I'm traveling next week, though, so I'm not sure how often I'll be able to check in and post. Of course my oldest note is from 1886, so it might not matter...

Here's the handy-dandy schedule for which notes to post when; however, if your schedule presents conflicts, playing "catch-up" on subsequent dates is not only permitted ... it's highly encouraged! August 17: Series 1862 $1 US Note August 18: Series 1869 $1 Rainbow US Note August 19: Series 1874/1875/1878 $1 Flaming Red Seal US Note August 20: Series 1880 $1 Brown or Red Seal US Note August 21: Series 1886/1891 $1 Martha Silver Certificate August 22: Series 1890/1891 $1 Stanton Treasury Coin Note August 23: Series 1896 $1 Educational Silver Certificate August 24: Series 1899 $1 Black Eagle Silver Certificate August 25: Series 1917 $1 US Note August 26: Series 1918 $1 Screaming Eagle FRBN August 27: Series 1923 $1 Silver Certificate (blue seal) August 28: Series 1923 $1 Silver Certificate (red seal) August 29: Series 1928 $1 Funnyback (blue seal) August 30: Series 1928 $1 Funnyback (red seal) August 31: Series 1934 $1 Funnyback September 1: Series 1935 $1 Silver Certificate September 2: Series 1935 $1 Hawaii September 3: Series 1935 $1 North Africa September 4: Series 1957 $1 Silver Certificate September 5: Series 1963 $1 FRN Quote: I would definetly like to see experimental printings. Bring it on! This thread is meant to take a comprehensive look at the history of the "dollar bill," and nothing that can be considered such as should be left out. In fact, if there's enough interest, I don't see why the thread can't keep going after 9/5 to accommodate the more modern small-sized issues. I'm expecting the first couple of days to be a little slow ... haven't seen a lot of Flaming Red Seal Sawhorses or Stanton notes out there.

August 171862 $1 Legal TenderIt's a sad excuse for a rag, I know ... but a dealer happened to have it priced right and, since I didn't have one, I couldn't pass. These notes were printed on such thin paper, it's amazing any of them survive at all. Sadly, that's if for me on this thread until the Educational note ... hope there are at least a few folks with some awesome early notes out there!

Hey, its not that terrible. I'm not a big note collector, but seeing the beauty put into older notes puts all the new Monopoly money to shame!

Agreed, coinaddict1795! I can't wait to get a complete "type" set put together for myself. It will be inspiring to see all at once how these notes evolved througout the last 150 years ... and how the obligations slowly eroded away until we arrived at the 100% debt-based currency system we have today

As I expected ... nobody came up with a rainbow note today They're tough notes to get in any condition, I know! The 1869 is my clear favorite of the six different series to feature the same basic front design. I would also love to see a set of all the 1869 rainbow notes in all denominations! I wonder if such a set has been assembled in modern times by a private collector... Hope someone has a Flaming Red Seal to post tomorrow!
