1921-Peace-Dollar

This Peace dollar was not included in my father's deposit box holdings, which I think was odd, as it IS a 1921 specimen.

I am wondering how much the gigantic gouge underneath her eye might have to do with it. The luster is sub-par, but in some light, it gleans quite well.

Looking at some other CC's and TPG's grades on coins that have a similar blemish, it's a big trade-off with overall eye appeal, it seems.

Thanks for any grading stabs, comments, etc.

It's been quite a journey through my grandfather's and dad's coins. I will post a brief commentary soon, and more specimens.

Tough call. Yes, it's in the very worst place on a Peace for such a mark, but at the same time it looks to be the only real distraction on the coin. And since it's plainly a bagmark, I don't see it having much effect on a Circulated grade, although it's probably worth a full point on a Mint State grade.

Basing my entire opinion on the reverse detail - which happens to be the very_first_place one looks when grading Peace dollars (done this before, have you? ), I have to think this one saw some slight circulation.

The flatness over her ear and on the eagles' wing are from the
strike, not wear, as it is high relief. Still a decent coin,
very little wear, looks high end AU

Hmm... can't tell if that's a hint of sarcasm... but no, I don't do this very often. I will check the posting images for coin grading again. Thought both sides would help.

Anyway, at what point does one think of slabbing medium grade coins?

Thanks for all the replies! Very helpful.

Absolutely not. The area shown in your final detail image - the shoulder - is so important to the overall grading of Peace dollars that I'd be willing to have a go at grading a whole coin (to the extent of the AU/MS decision) just from that detail. It implied to me that this was far from your first Peace dollar, and you knew what the experts would want to see.

Just like one can darn near grade a Morgan (to a similar standard) from the ear/cotton bolls, or from the legs/talons.

Hey, SSDD ... I went to NGC and saw that on the reverse, their red wear regions is exactly as you state. Thanks for the tip, and I apologize for the wrong "read" on your post.

Again, thanks to you experts for the excellent evaluation(s).

I see it no worse than AU-58 but it could grade MS.

I wouldn't submit it for grading. Looks like a nice AU and likely 55 or 58. If it did grade MS it would probably be a 61 or 62 "market grade" and would need good luster for that to happen.

It's a $150 piece to me.

Point well taken, and I agree.

WARNING: Long, rambling post follows:

This now makes the coins in the Safe Deposit Box more mysterious to me, and I need help in determining whether they might be considered "favorites" to my Dad, or truly have a collection value (I know they do, but you get my point). Some coins are obvious, 1878 Morgan, 1921 Peace. some coins befuddle me, like the heavily toned 1921 Morgan, right next to one that could be high AU, low MS (thanks for the replies on the OP).

Are there any coins I should post for opinion?

Sorry, I do not have pix of all the coins YET. I have 2,000 pre-1964 coins that I am cataloging (not including 4,500 wheat pennies, 2 dozen Whitmans, 25 Proof/UNC Sets, 300 sequenced FRNs, 50 vintage bank notes, 300 world coins, and $1,200 in loose change from 1965-2014).

A list of what is in the SDB: () = Quantity
This comes from notes written on the envelopes, see pix below, but they're not the best quality. I didn't have gloves for the group pix in boxes when discovered, and I took only the obverse on the 2nd visit to catalog the dates.

Just take really good notes and catalog everything before you decide what to do with ANY of it! Oh, and have fun!
