Looking for a stab at a grade. Great luster. Sitting on about 40 of these, and a ballpark would suffice for now. Pic of reverse mid section of this coin shows dripping of something (?), not sure if there's a safe way to clean that portion with a Q-tip, or just leave it. Thanks! More pix below.

I have little experience grading Washington quarters. I believe there are a couple of members who are pretty skilled at grading these. Have you tried acetone? This is a safe method to remove organic substances on coins without harming them. You'll want pure acetone and not fingernail polish remover. There are a lot of threads available on how to safely use it. Hope to see more of your inherited collection DB. -MV

I was going to give it a 64. Not worth slabbing until you get to 66, no way this one is going to go that with the hit on the eagles breast and the marks on the obverse. junjun, why you calling details?

Depositbox, I have been reading through your posts, so sorry for your loss.
I will say that it is refreshing to see a person so new to the sport "do the work" as it is obvious from your postings that you are putting a lot of effort into honoring your fathers and grandfathers collection.
I specialize in Washingtons. Please feel free to send me an email if I can lend any insight or assistance.

Sorry... I have been actually working. When someone says AU55 details, and the like... what does that mean?
Believe me, when I am finally done, I have so many more questions that I hope will be more non-stupid. I know I can ask stupid questions as the forum has been patient, but getting a handle on key dates for each denomination that might have collector value is my goal.
Thanks for the replies, and again, please forgive me if I lapse in responses. I am so interested, but I have to keep my day job until I find that key date!

A grade that has "details" at the end of it means the coin has some kind of problem o damage (cleaning, bent, corroded, etc.)
Here is a scale that collectors use for grading. It starts at 1 and goes to 70.
1 poor 2 fair 3 about good 4-6 good 8-10 very good 12-15 Fine 20-35 Very Fine 40-45 extra fine 50-58 About uncirculated 60-62 uncirculated 63-64 Choice uncirculated 65-68 gem uncirculated 69 near perfect 70 perfect
