The Mint's earliest depiction of Liberty just went for $705K, but dear God, has Liberty ever been less attractive?

It is perhaps a better likeness of Medusa than of Liberty!

And I've always wondered: Is her eye supposed to be open or closed? I can see it both ways.

I thought it was Beetlejuice..

But seriously, what a wonderful piece of American numismatic history.

The silver plug looks like a big earring.

Tremendous coin and amazing that it has made the journey to 2014 is such a fine state.

As to the Liberty image ... fully agreed that follow-on numismatic artists have executed more visually appealing examples.

I am glad that this was not the best the mint's artists could come up with. It is still a wonderful piece of early American numismatics.

Too bad Joseph Wright died his design for the quarter was fairly attractive. http://uspatterns.com/j12p14.html

I do think he had a role in the design of the Liberty Cap cent which to me looks like a more mature Liberty of the quarter pattern.

Of course, it could be the lateness of the hour that is making my eyes see similarities between the two that may or may not be there

It's so ugly, it's sort of...beautiful! But, it's always been "the eye of the beholder".

Amazing coin, but certainly not the prettiest depiction of Liberty!

You must remember that in those days the Mint workers were going out to have a drink of two for lunch. After several of those drinks, the design started to look really great. Once minted, to late to see what they did after they sobered up.
