When getting new silver dollars, I try to give it the magnet test, but I usually forget. I decided to test a few recent acquisitions. The magnet slapped real hard onto one of them....my first fake....an 1878-CC. Boy, this coin sure looks sooooo real. It's the same size and so well done. I think it's a little lighter than a real one, but I don't have a scale. I'm keeping close by as a reminder to check them coins

Got it on ebay and it was a few weeks ago, so I'm just logging this one down as a nice lesson learned.

I'm sure there are more fakes than genuine.

You know an 1843-CC if fake when you see those :-)

If it was a few weeks ago then you should get your money back. I dont see how it was a lesson learned. Seeing as you bought it online and there was no way of knowing it was fake because you surely couldnt weigh it, check it out in person, or stick it to a magnet.

Now if you bought it in person and because of you not knowing what to look for and how to check, then it would be a lesson learned.

Here's that rascal that is a fake. Looks aged and worn for the period. I can't tell from the real thing, except to weigh it.

The ebay buyer protection is effective for 30 days. "You're eligible for the ebay Money Back Guarantee as long as you contact your seller within 30 days of the estimated delivery date."

I don't like the second 8 in the date. Or the stars. Both just seem off to me.

That's a really bad fake. Grainy surfaces, flat date, and those stars. Those stars man...they look like pastina.

Future reference: the date location is a dead giveaway. Too far for 1878-CC. That said, the whole coin - every single feature including surface granularity and color - is wrong. Your goal now is to learn Morgans well enough so it's as obvious to you as it is to me. This one is egregious, and your ability to identify fakes this bad will come quickly.

AND that magnet test is far from great. Some I know purchased several Silver Dollars and they all passed the weight test, non magnetic, and looked and felt real. Yet somehow dealers at a coin show all agreed, all were fake.
