I think you could be more specific with your question ...

Modern ... Classic ... Silver ...gold ... Denomination?

If you are looking for cheap cameo proofs, try going for something like this...

Buying-Proofs
This coin cost me about $8 and it was even slabbed.

"Modern but classic would be ok"

Go with a nice later date (62 or 63) dcam Franklin half dollar. Proof dcam can be found for pretty reasonable prices and they have great eye appeal.

Also, you're right on the fence as far as classic/modern.

I sold the same Jefferson commemorative dollar as in the picture for about $25 and it was PF70. was that a good sale or below what I could have gotten, which was 42.50 according to NGC at the time?

Depending on where you live, try finding out if there are any coin shows in your area. Or in areas near you. At many coin shows there are dealers with many, many Proof coins. Some loose and some in original sets. At a recent coin show near me one dealer sold all his loose Proofs and all to one person.

prices on ebay are what the buyer decides it is worth to them, if an item goes over what you are willing to pay all you have to do is wait for the next one...there are plenty of good deals there

It is true that a lot of stuff gets bid up too high and there is a fair share of crazy high buy it nows. There are also a bunch of fairly priced coins and some good deals from time to time, like proofs. The key is to narrow down what you are searching for and to check often.
