I have wanted to buy the 2009 high relief gold as it is a beautiful coin. However, as I was looking into it (more like dreaming of it as it is out of my price comfort area), I noticed there might be a 2015 high relief next year.

Do you think this will have an impact on the 2009, and if so, to what extent.

It seems the 2009 has been coming down in price with some on e-bay going for as little as 2k lately.

I haven't looked at prices of those 2k9's on ebay, but as gold had been taking a beating lately, your observation doesn't come as a surprise. Regardless of numismatic worth, intrinsic metal value will have an effect on a modern gold coin like that.

I just know for me the 2009 high relief was on my wish list, but the price stopped me from buying it. However, if a new high relief comes out, I might consider it instead, and figure others must feel the same as me. That is, I would love a high relief coin, probably prefer the 2009, but dang, if a new one comes out, and it looks great and costs a lot less, then .......... 2009 high relief what?

While some would want both and/or the original, I think others might only consider a new one because of cost.

Nothing is official, but if you google 2015 high relief gold, you will find several articles on the subject.

The U.S. Mint brought ALL of their expertise to bear in the production of the 2009 HR 1 oz Double Eagle. THAT would make it an extremely hard coin to fake. This fact must have added to the original sale price.

For me, if a 2015 HR 1 Ounce was issued, it would have to have the St Gaudens design both sides as well; can't better THAT design! Such a repeat issue however, would certainly have a devaluing effect on the original 2009 issue.

HR one ounce coins in both gold and silver have been marketed by other mints around the World, since 2009, copying the U.S. Mint's original idea. THEY can't claim the St. Gaudens's design!

Buy yourself a nice original St Gaudens Double Eagle in MS 60 or better; just make sure it is authentic, because ALL dates of American gold have been faked at some time or other.

Thanks for the info.

I thought the consideration was the same front, but the back would be updated to reflect a new eagle design. There was a youtube from I think "salivate metal" that showed it. I actually like the new back design.

In addition, I don't know if it will happen at all, or if would even be a gold double eagle.
